Bang for the buck

This is my second dedicated Macro lens. The other I have is from Tokina, which is 100mm and has been reviewed elsewhere on this site. I had decided that I required more working distance and therefore was eyeing the Sigma 180mm which was at a maximum aperture of 2.8 and came optically stabilised as well. However, just like in the case of the 105mm Micro Nikkor, I was hit by serious availability issues. Based on other reviews on the net, I decided to go in for the Tamron 180mm which Flipkart showed as in stock. I ordered one, but after about two weeks was told that the lens was in not available and all the money was credited back, which was good. What was not good was the fact that I was still without a lens. I managed to get one from the grey market and have been happy ever since. What I like about the lens: 1. Well constructed 2. Pull-push / clutch mechanism for switching between AF and MF 3. Override even in AF 4. Superb optics - blurs are purely my fault and not that of the lens 5. Working distance is really good 6. Doubles as a telephoto prime for birding, though you have to be close to the bird(s) 7. Relatively light weight, making hand held shots easier What I dislike about the lens: 1. Focus hunting worse than the Tokina 2. There is no focus limiter switch 3. Maximum aperture of 3.5 instead of 2.8 (the reason for a deduction of one star) Overall, I would rate this lens very highly. To summarise, this is bang for the buck. If Flipkart can keep this in stock, and you can spend the money, then pick it up.
